The Trials of Christ – The Gospel of Luke Series (Luke 22:63 – 23:25)


A.  Introduction

1.  A Kangaroo Court (Acts 2:23-24)

An unofficial court held by a group of people in order to try someone regarded, especially without good evidence, as guilty of a crime, without using recognized standards of justice.

2.  The limits of Jewish power (Luke 22:22)

B.  Jesus before the Sanhedrin (22:63-71)

1.  The charge?  Blasphemy

·  Jesus is the Christ [the Messiah] (Luke 4:18-19)

·  Jesus is the Son of Man [in Luke, Jesus used this title for himself 25 x’s] (Daniel 7:13-14)

·  Jesus is the Son of God (Luke 1:34-35)

2.  The verdict? Guilty (v. 71; Matthew 20:18-19)

C.  Jesus before Pilate, part 1 (23:1-7)

1.  The charge? Sedition/Insurrection/Rebellion

·  Attempting to subvert the nation (v. 2)

·  Encouraging the non-payment of taxes (v. 2)

·  Claiming to be King of the Jews (v. 2; John 18:33-37)

2.  The verdict? Not guilty (v.  4)

D.    Jesus before Herod (23:8-12)

1.  The charge? The same as above

2.  The verdict? The same as above (vs. 14 and 15)

E.  Jesus before Pilate, part 2 (23:13-25)

1.  The charge? The same as above
2.  The verdict? Not guilty (vs. 14 and 22)

3.  But this time, it was much more complicated…

·  The “people” showed up (v. 13).

·  Pilate’s wife had a dream (Matthew 27:19).

·  Pilate was overcome with fear (John 19:6-19).

·  Jesus was found guilty of being who He is – the King of the Jews (Luke 23:38; John 19:15 and v. 19).

F.  Conclusion (1 Timothy 1:15-17)
