The Salvation of the People of Israel – The Zechariah Series (Zechariah 3:1-10)


Introduction

1.  The Lord’s intention is to save Israel (8:13; Romans 9:1-5; 10:1-4; 11:25-27).

2.  We have seen that the Lord will save the land and the city – but what about the undeserving people?

3:1  “Joshua” = the High Priest who returned from Babylon (Haggai 1:1); the one who stands before the Lord as a representative for all the people (v. 8); “Yahweh saves”

3:1  “theangel of the Lord” = the Pre-incarnate Christ; the Second Person of the Trinity

3:1  “Satan” = the adversary; the prosecutor; the one who accuses (Revelation 12:10)

3:2  “rebuke you” = not because Satan’s accusations are false, but because of God’s gracious election, choice and love of Israel; (Romans 11:28-29; I John 2:1)

3:2  “a burning stick snatched from the fire” = the condition of everyone prior to their salvation (Ephesians 2:1)

3:2  “snatched” = God’s unmerited favor and grace in salvation

3:3-4  “filthy clothes” = excrement soiled and covered; dirty and smelly (Isaiah 64:6; Matthew 23:37-38); sin

3:4   “rich garments” = the result of salvation by grace through faith: the great exchange (Revelation 7:14; 2 Corinthians 5:21)

3:5  “turban” = Israel’s complete reinstatement to its consecrated position as ‘Holy to the LORD’ (Exodus 28:36-37)

3:6   “charge” = a duty to be kept; only, then, given to Israel in the New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34; Ezekiel 36:26-27)

3:8  “my servant”= The Messiah – who serves His people unto death (Isaiah 52:13; John 15:13)

3:8  “the Branch”= The Rightful Heir to David’s throne (Isaiah 11:1) and the One who will bring new life (1 John 5:11-12)

3:9  “the stone” = the One who will judge Israel’s enemies (Daniel 2:44-45); represents salvation by grace through faith (Isaiah 28:16)

3:9  “the seven eyes” = the seven-fold Spirit of the Lord; the Messiah’s full intelligence (Isaiah 11:2)

3:9  “engrave an inscription” = the names of the sons of Israel (Exodus 28:11)

3:9   “in a single day” = the final and full salvation of Israel (12:10 and 13:1; Jeremiah 32:27)

3:10  “to sit under” = peace and prosperity during the Millennial reign of the Messiah (Micah 4:2-4)
