The Man among the Myrtle Trees – The Zechariah Series (Zechariah 1:7-17)

A.  What is a “vision” (v. 8; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Hebrews 1:1-2)?

B.  Who is the “angel of the LORD” (v. 11; Exodus 3:2; Psalm 34:6-7; Judges 6:11-16)?

·  angel = messenger (John 1:1-2)
·  a pre-incarnate  manifestation of the Second Person of the Trinity

C.   What are myrtle trees, and why are they in a ravine (v. 8)?

D.  Who is the man on the red horse and what do the other horses represent (vv. 8-11)?

·  Red = indicates both the first and second advent (Isaiah 63:1-6)
·  He is an intercessor (v. 12; Hebrews 7:25).

E.  Why is the angel of the LORD not pleased that the whole world “is at rest and in peace” (v. 11)?

F.  What are the “kind and comforting words” of the LORD Almighty (vv. 13-17)?

  1. The LORD declared His great love for His people (v. 14 and 8:2).
  2. The LORD was “a little angry” with Judah, but the nations went too far (v. 15).
  3. The LORD will returnto Jerusalem with mercy (v. 16: Matthew 23:37-39).
  4. The LORD will rebuild the Temple (v. 16; Isaiah 2:2-5).
  5. The LORD will rebuild Jerusalem (v. 16; Psalm 48:1-2).
  6. The LORD will cause the cities of Judah to be prosperous (v. 17).
  7. The LORD will comfort Jerusalem (v. 17; 12:10).
  8. The LORD will “choose” Jerusalem (v. 17).

G.  Application

  1. What the world calls “peace” is not real peace. God wants us to have real peace (Zechariah 14:9; John 14:6).
  2. When God chooses you, He chooses you forever (Ephesians 1:11-12; 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5; 1 Peter 2:9-10).
