The Crucifixion of Jesus – The Gospel of Luke Series (Luke 23:26-49)


A.  Jesus: manifesting the fullness of who He is at the cross (Hebrews 13:8)

1.  Jesus the King – ruling as Sovereign, on that day, and on every other day (vv. 36-38; John 10:17-18 and 15:13).

2.  Jesus the Prophet – revealing the truth about the future (vv. 27-31).

3.  Jesus the Priest – reconciling people and God (vv. 32-35 and 39-43; Isaiah 53:12; Hebrews 7:23-28).

·  Steps to reconciliation with God  observed through Jesus’ interaction with the Thief

First, fear God (v. 40)

Second, confess sinfulness (v. 41)

Third, acknowledge Christ’s sinlessness (v. 41)

Fourth, express faith with words through prayer (v. 42)

Fifth, acknowledge that Jesus is the Lord – the King (v. 42)

Sixth, believe Jesus’ promises and His desire to have an eternal relationship (v. 43)

Seventh, believe that salvation is by faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8-9)

·  Jesus removed the barrier that stood between people and God and made eternal reconciliation possible (v. 45; John 14:2-3; Hebrews 6:19; Matthew 27:50-51; Hebrews 10:4-7 and 10).

B.  God’s Grace was already breaking out – all over!

1.  Simon of Cyrene and his family (v. 26; Mark 15:21; Romans 16:13)

2.  The Penitent Thief (v. 41)

3.  The Roman Centurion (v. 47)

4.  The  mockers who later “beat their breasts” (v. 48; Matthew 27:39-40; Acts 2:22-24)

5.  Let His grace break out over you (Romans 5:7-8)!
