The Consequences of Rejecting Jesus – The Gospel of Luke Series (Luke 20:1-19)

1.  The Offenses (Luke 9:22)

·  Jesus had exercised His own authority (vs. 1 and 2; 4:32).

·  Jesus had entered Jerusalem as a King (v. 38; Zechariah 9:9).

·  Jesus had called them thieves (v. 46).

·  Jesus said that they had misused the Temple that was under their care (v. 46; Isaiah 56:7).

2.  The Questions (vv. 1-8)

·  Their question was, “Who gave you this authority?” (v. 2)

·  His question in reply was, “Was John’s baptism from God or from man?” (v.3; Luke 7:30)

·  John had said many things about Jesus…

·  The answer to Jesus’ question would answer their own question.

3.  The Parable (vv. 9-16)

·  The owner/planter = God the Father

·  The vineyard = Israel (Isaiah 5:7)

·  The tenants = the chief priests and the teachers of the Law (v. 19)

·  The fruit of the harvest = saved Israel and the world (Luke 19:10 and 46)

·  The servants = the prophets (Hebrews 1:1-2)

·  The son = Jesus (Luke 3:22)

·  The others = Gentiles – like you (Ephesians 2:19-22 and 3:6)!

4.  The Prophesy (vv. 17-19; Psalm 118:19-27; Isaiah 28:16; Isaiah 8:14-15)

·  Tripping over the cornerstone = failing to realize who Jesus is – rejecting Him

·  The cornerstone falling on someone = those who fall under judgment for rejecting Jesus
