On the Road to Emmaus – The Gospel of Luke Series (Luke 24:13-35)


A  Introduction: Who are these two guys?

1.  Cleopas and a fellow citizen of Emmaus (v. 13).

2.  Two of the men who thought that the women were speaking nonsense (vv. 9-11).

B.  The progression of that day on the seven mile road….or fourteen mile road?!

1.  They were perplexed and disappointed (vv. 13-24).

·  Downcast  (v. 17)

·  Hopes dashed (v. 21)

·  Confused (vv. 22-24)

2.  They were rebuked and reprimanded (v. 25).

·  They were foolish because they didn’t believe the Word.

·  They were “slow [dull] of heart to believe” (Romans 10:9-10).

3.  They were reminded and instructed (vv. 25-27)

·  First, Jesus opened the Scriptures to them (v. 32).

·  Second, their hearts were changed from “slow to believe” to “burning” (v. 32).

·  Third, their eyes were opened (v. 31; Luke 21:33; Isaiah 40:6-8, 55:8-11; Psalm 119:105).

4.     They believed and testified (vv. 28-35).

·  Invite Jesus in – and He will reveal Himself (Revelation 3:20; James 4:8; Matthew 4:4; Romans 10:17).

·  They returned to Jerusalem that night, changed men, to give their testimony (v. 33).
