Are You Acceptable to God? – The Gospel of Luke Series (Luke 18:9-17)


1.  Introduction to the Cream of the Crop and the Scum of Society

*Known for his righteous lifestyle                                      *Known as an extortionist and a traitor

*Confident of his position before the Lord                        *Aware of his deep separation from the Lord

*Respected and honored by others                                  *Rejected and despised by others

*Justified himself before God                                            *Asked God to justify him by grace

*Thought that he needed no mercy                                  *Could only hope for mercy

*Went home unjustified                                                     *Went home justified

2.  Justified = to be declared innocent, holy, just, and righteous before God (Romans 3:21-22)

3.  We are never acceptable to God on the basis of:

·  Our own righteousness (v. 9; 1 Samuel 16:7; Romans 3:23)·  Our own sense of what we think we deserve (v. 9; Revelation 20:11-15)

4.  We are only acceptable to God on the basis of:

·  Our honest brokenness with regard to our sin (Psalm 51:6 and 17)

·  Our willingness to confess who we are with godly sorrow (v. 13; 1 Timothy 1:15-16)

·  His gracious willingness to be reconciled to us (Ephesians 2:8-9)

·  His willingness to remove His anger from us (v. 13; Hebrews 2:17)

·  Our willingness to trust Him and receive Him (vs. 15-17; John 1:12)
